Q1. Read the following passage carefully:
1. In mountaineering you often face life and death situations. It is an adventurous sport and there is a sense of achievement. Somebody has said that adventure is the willingness to step into the unknown. You learn to appreciate it only when you have experienced it. In mountaineering one has to first cross the mountain of fear in one's mind. It needs mental strength more than it needs physical stamina.
2. I was a sportsperson in my college days, so I was physically fit. But mountaineering was a male dominated profession then. It took me time to convince my parents that this was what I wanted to do.
3. Luckily I received an invitation to join a pre-Everest expedition from Indian Mountaineering Foundation. It was then that my goal was fixed. I worked hard, practised climbing with a bag filled with stones and jogged daily. My mother used to feel bad but after the Everest expedition she felt proud of me
4. Everest expedition in harsh climate is very challenging: you feel isolated and you miss your home a lot. Tasty food is a rarity in the mountains. The Everest expedition of 1984 was three months long. There was an avalanche at one point. Mountaineering tests your team spirit in such
ordeals at such a great height and in unforgiving weather, you feel close to God. When I reached
the peak, I remembered my parents and thanked them for all that they had done for me. I placed an idol of Goddess Durga in the snow. I was the only woman in the team to complete the expedition.
5. In 1985 I led an all women group to Everest and in 1994 a women's rafting expedition on the mighty Ganga from Haridwar to Kolkata. I lead women's groups because they need to be encouraged to think differently. Women must step out of their homes. I would say there are more opportunities in India than anywhere else in the world. 6. If you wish to take up mountaineering as a career, you will discover innumerable opportunities as you gather vast experiences. The biggest risk in life is not to take a risk. Nature is a demanding classroom. It teaches you a lot. So go out and explore to be self-confident.

II Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow:
(1)The majority of children around the world have at least one sibling. The Sibling relationship is likely to last longer than any other relationship in one's lifetime and plays an integral part in the lives of families. Yet, in comparison to the wealth of studies on parent child relationships, relatively little attention has been devoted to the role of siblings and their impact on one another's development.
(2)In recent decades, research has focused on sibling relations in early Childhood, and the shift from examining the role of structural variables (e.g-age, birth order) towards more process variables (e.g.-under-standing of their social worlds) has proved to be a fruitful direction. Siblings are viewed as an integral component of family systems and as an important context for learning and development but there are a number of methodological and conceptual challenges to studying siblings from this perspective.
(3)In early childhood, four major characteristics of sibling relation are prominent. First, sibling interactions are emotionally charged relationships defined by strong emotions of a positive, negative and sometimes undecided quality. Second, sibling relations are defined by intimacy. As youngsters spend large amounts of time playing together, they know each other very well. This long history and intimate knowledge translates into opportunities for providing emotional and instrumental support for one another. Third, sibling relations are characterized by large individual differences in the quality of children's relations with one another. Fourth, the age difference between siblings often makes the issues of power and control as well as rivalry and jealousy, sources of contention for children, but also provide a context for more positive types of complementary exchanges, such as teaching, helping, and caregiving interactions.
(4)Broadly speaking, the characteristics of sibling relations sometimes make them challenging for
parents, because of the potentially emotional and highly charged nature of the relationship.
On the basis of your reading of the passage given above, answer the following questions.
1. Why is sibling relationship an important aspect of family life?
2. What has given a fruitful direction to the research on siblings in the recent decades?
3. Which perspective of studying siblings is challenging?
4. Pick any one line from the passage that proves that the importance of siblings has been underrated?
5. Does age difference between sibling always result in rivalry? How do you know
6. Do you agree that siblings interactions are emotionally charged relationships defined by uncertain behavior? Justify using the above passage.
7. On the basis of the visual inputs given above, the following is NOT TRUE.
(a)Handling siblings is a piece of cake for the parents.
(b)Sibling rivalry is an important aspect of a sibling relationship.
(c)Sibling interactions are emotionally charged.
(d)Sibling relations are characterized by large individual differences.
8. Give a suitable title to the passage.
